During Kidney Cancer Awareness Month, the Kidney Cancer Association encourages everyone to #OrangeUp and honor those impacted by this disease.

In the US, over 600,000 people live with kidney cancer and about 81,000 new cases will be diagnosed in 2025.

However, in the last decade, over a dozen new treatments for kidney cancer have been approved the research community continues to grow, and many active clinical trials mean options for patients have expanded significantly.

In addition, our understanding of kidney cancer as a multi-faceted diagnosis is growing. Kidney cancer is primarily diagnosed as clear cell renal cell carcinoma (RCC), accounting for about 80% of diagnoses, with current treatments being most effective for this type. However, the prognosis for patients with metastatic disease remains challenging, underscoring the need for advanced therapies. Additionally, the medical community continues to strive for more treatment options for less common types including chromophobe RCC, papillary RCC, Wilms Tumor and translocation RCC, which primarily affect children and adolescents, and renal medullary carcinoma (RMC), which primarily affects African Americans.

During March, the Kidney Cancer Association spearheads key awareness efforts under the theme “Fuel Progress and Fund Hope”:

#OrangeUp – #OrangeUp is the KCA’s annual Kidney Cancer Awareness Month theme. Orange is the national kidney cancer awareness color. Community members can show their support for those with kidney cancer by wearing orange and sharing their photos using the #OrangeUp hashtag on social media.

#OrangeUp Your City – Landmarks across the US will glow orange in March to raise awareness about kidney cancer and celebrate the local kidney cancer community.

KCA Challenge: 81K Strong – The KCA’s annual fundraiser kicks off on March 1 and lasts through World Kidney Day on June 19, 2025. In recognition of the 81,000 people who will receive a kidney cancer diagnosis this year, challenge teams can create a unique 81-themed challenge to complete during that time, all while raising awareness and funds for kidney cancer research.

Orange Ribbons – Order free orange ribbon stickers from the KCA’s website to use and wear in support of kidney cancer awareness.

Throughout Kidney Cancer Awareness Month, the KCA urges people to turn awareness into action to “Fuel Progress, Fund Hope” to bolster funding for critical medical research necessary to improve patient lives and find a cure for kidney cancer. The KCA celebrates the collective efforts of patients, families, healthcare professionals, and anyone who advocates to move the needle in kidney cancer.
